Professor Bernard Receives the CABA’s John D. Lawson Award

January 8, 2015
New York, NY
The Canadian American Bar Association announced today that the John D. Lawson Award will be awarded to Bernard Hibbitts, Publisher and Editor in Chief of JURIST, the award-winning, law student-powered legal news service that he created at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law where he has served as a Professor of Law since 1996.  The Award recognizes Canadians who have excelled in the practice of law and/or made an outstanding contribution to the law or legal scholarship in the United States.

A Canadian Rhodes Scholar born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Bernard Hibbitts studied law at Oxford, Dalhousie Law School, the University of Toronto, and Harvard Law School (LLM 1988), where he was Associate Editor of the Harvard International Law Journal. He is a former law clerk to Justice Gerald LeDain of the Supreme Court of Canada. He created the site that became JURIST in 1996.  Hibbitts has addressed multiple academic and professional audiences in the United States and Canada. His scholarship has been published in Law and History Review, New York University Law Review, University of Pittsburgh Law Review, University of Toronto Law Journal, McGill Law Journal, Law Library Journal, Serials Review, Wired magazine and elsewhere, and is widely available on the Internet. Two of his articles on the historical connections between American and Canadian lawyers and legal cultures have been included in volumes published by the Osgoode Society for Canadian Legal History.

“Professor Hibbitts exemplifies the dedication to legal scholarship through academic achievement and innovation in teaching and communication that the John D. Lawson Award recognizes,” said Sarah Robertson, President of the Canadian American Bar Association.
