The Ontario – New York Legal Summit
Categories: Other Events of Interest
- March 28, 2014 @ 8:30 am - 7:00 pm
The New York State Bar Association’s International Section and the Ontario Bar Association are pleased to present the second Ontario-New York Legal Summit to be held in Toronto on March 28 and in New York City on March 31, 2014. The first Summit held in 2012 was extremely successful with approximately 150 registrants in Toronto alone. In addition, this Summit will be webcast.
With ever-increasing trade and business across the U.S.-Canadian border, lawyers must keep abreast of cross-border legal issues in order to best serve their clients’ needs and increase their own business development opportunities. Canada and the U.S. share a common legal system, and, while they are separate and distinct jurisdictions, the interface of the Canadian and U.S. economies provides nearly infinite opportunity. In light of this special and unique relationship, the theme of the Summit:
1 Legal System + 2 Jurisdictions = Infinite Opportunity
The features of the common legal system, highlighted by the different approaches to various challenges and issues in the two jurisdictions will be explored at the Summit, which features 18 CLE/CPD-eligible panels covering a wide range of issues, such as cross-border taxation, cross-border financing transactions, multijurisdictional class litigation, alternate dispute resolution and resources, mining and energy. In addition there will be plenary sessions in both Toronto and NYC, in which it is planned to feature high-level federal, state and provincial officials. The Summit in Toronto–NYC is a regional meeting offering participants opportunities to:
•Attend programs with faculty foremost in their field who will address, at a very high level, both legal and professional issues and their impact on international practices;
•Exchange ideas and strategies with other professionals on an informal basis;
•Meet and network with key players from leading Canadian and U.S. firms who share common interests and concerns relating to the cross-border practice of law.
