CABA’s Statement on Tariffs

—For Immediate Release—

New York, NY, February 3, 2025

As an organization committed to promoting the rule of law, bilateral trade and the interests of the cross-border legal community, the Canadian American Bar Association is alarmed by the potential escalating trade war between the United States and Canada.

Should the intended tariffs come into effect and persist for a prolonged period of time, they are likely to undermine the United States-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement and erode the Rule of Law through their reliance on emergency powers. They are also certain to harm Canadian and American consumers, workers and businesses in two of the world’s most integrated economies, sitting alongside the longest undefended border globally.

CABA therefore calls on the leadership of both countries to engage in a good faith dialogue aimed at finding common ground and resolving this trade dispute before it is allowed to cause irreparable harm to the legal framework governing cross-border trade and their historic friendship.
