Election for New President and Officers of CABA

Dear Members:

In November we will be holding elections for the 2013-14 President, Vice President, Vice-President Canada and Secretary-Treasurer positions of the Canadian American Bar Association.  These are two year terms commencing January 1, 2013. If you are interested in running for any of the positions, please send me, by November 15th, a short statement about why you would be interested in the position.  The statements will be compiled and provided to the members at one time, who will then have an opportunity to vote.

It’s been a pleasure to serve as your President for the last 2 years and I want to thank our current Officers for all their dedicated work and support of CABA!

Best regards,

David

Alternatives to the H-1B Visa (cap 50% full)

Please be advised that the H-1B cap count for the 2013 fiscal year is approximately 50% full even though the USCIS has only been accepting applications for four weeks.  At this rate, the 85,000 H-1B cap may be reached as early as June or July – the earliest in the last few years.  Canadian citizen applicants looking to apply for a new H-1B visa this fiscal year should have their employers do so immediately.  Once the cap is reached, Canadians should examine other alternatives, such as an L-1 intracompany transfer visa, E-2 treaty trader visa, O-1 extraordinary visa, or a TN work visa for certain occupations (http://www.nafta-sec-alena.org/en/view.aspx?x=343&mtpiID=147#Ap1603.D.1).

California Law School Scholarships

From time to time Canadian and American students write to CABA concerning knowledge of state scholarships for law school. The California Bar Foundation’s Diversity Scholarship seeks to support newly admitted law students from groups historically underrepresented in the legal profession who have committed to attend a California law school. Candidates apply for the Scholarship at the beginning of the summer prior to commencing their law school studies. The Scholarship helps pay the costs of obtaining a law school education, including tuition, fees, books, and related education expenses. Awards of up to $7,500 recognize incoming first year law students with financial need who demonstrate a desire to make a positive impact as a community leader. Since 2008, the Foundation has supported more than 90 law students with awards totaling more than $600,000 through the Diversity Scholarship.

All 2012 Diversity Scholarships will be awarded in person at a reception to be held in early October 2012 in Los Angeles. For more information about the scholarship, including an application, please see the Foundation’s website: http://www.calbarfoundation.org/programs/scholarships/diversity.html or contact the Foundation’s Program.
